Wey & Arun Canal

London's Lost Route to the Sea has been derelict for many years, but plans are afoot to restore the line throughout.

The 23-mile Wey & Arun Canal once formed the inland link between the River Thames and the South Coast. Most of the waterway remains unnavigable, but several lengths have been returned to water by an enthusiastic group of volunteer restorers. Their greatest success is the navigable section at Loxwood, south from the Onslow Arms pub, where a trip-boat is based. Work is underway to extend this short section to a total of six miles of navigation.

The line is essentially rural, and has over the years become a haven for wildlife. Many lengths are still in private ownership.
