Wilts & Berks Canal

Running for 51 miles between the Kennet & Avon Canal and the River Thames, with a further 16 miles of branches, the derelict Wilts & Berks Canal is currently the longest unrestored canal in Britain. Restoration efforts are under way, with the towpath being reinstated and locks repaired.

The Wilts & Berks Canal is one of the most ambitious canal restoration projects in Britain. When complete, it will link three major waterways - the River Thames, the already restored Kennet & Avon Canal, and the Thames & Severn Canal, itself derelict but likely to reopen within seven years. This will form a remarkable network of boating, walking and cycling routes through Wessex and the Cotswolds.

Several miles of the canal have already been returned to water, with notable successes at Wootton Bassett and Swindon. At Melksham, a Canal Trail has been established, signposted with special waymarkers.
