Walking along the Worcester & Birmingham Canal
The Worcester & Birmingham Canal is an ideal place from which to explore the surrounding countryside. Using the OS maps you can follow the footpaths and bridleways which link and cross the towing path. Ordnance Survey Landranger maps 150 (Worcester and the Malverns) and 139 (Birmingham and surrounding area) will provide more suggestions. There are many sights to take in along the way, such as the National Trust property of Hanbury Hall.
The canal itself is an enjoyable walking route. You can follow the towpath all the way from Gas Street Basin in Birmingham to the River Severn in Worcester, except through the tunnels, of which only the short Edgbaston Tunnel has a towpath. You are recommended to take an OS map or waterway guide to help find your way through the streets above the tunnels, as signposting can be patchy.
There are circular walks at various places along the canal. Find out more at our walking pages.
