There are miles of traffic-free cycling routes along the canals of Birmingham and the Black Country, in particular the Wyrley & Essington.

The following sections are open to cyclists. Please cycle with great care and courtesy to others, observing the Waterways Code for Cyclists. You will need a valid British Waterways cycling permit on your cycle at all times, which can be downloaded free of charge. Dismounting is required under low bridges and at many lock flights. Information packs can be obtained from the Waterway Office.

  • Horseley Fields to Catshill Junction (25.6 km): Extra care required as the grass towpath may be both slippery if wet and rutted in places. Very popular with anglers and pedestrians. Do not speed.
  • Cannock Extension (2.4 km): Take extra care, some narrow areas, also popular with walkers.
  • Anglesey Branch (2.5 km): Take extra care, some narrow areas. Also popular with walkers.
