A holiday guide to Bath

The Kennet & Avon Canal winds through magnificent scenery to the World Heritage Site of Bath – a unique city set amidst rolling Somerset countryside.

A weekend in Bath is a weekend spent in the presence of architectural gems such as the Royal Crescent, the Roman Baths and the stately Cathedral. Admire the splendid honey-hued villas, visit the famous Hot Springs and wander the winding streets brought so vividly to life by Jane Austen.

Art buffs and history lovers will be right at home in this city of galleries, museums and exhibitions. Learn about the Romans (and their bathing habits), the ancient Abbey (over 1,600 years of history) and Bath’s most famous female novelist. Shopaholics will float down streets filled with not just the usual big names, but also specialist boutiques and independent stores. When you need a break, step inside a welcoming bistro or treat yourself in one of Bath’s celebrated restaurants.

For a day out with a touch of elegance, visit the restored Bath Assembly Rooms, hub of Georgian polite society from 1771. Familiar to any Austen fan, the Assembly Rooms were the place to see and be seen, to dance, play cards and woo prospective partners over tea, cakes and champagne.

Or, for a breath of fresh air, explore Capability Brown’s picturesque garden at Prior Park. This romantic retreat was a favourite of the poet, Alexander Pope, and visitors today are equally charmed by the landscaped fantasy which encompasses a sweeping valley, a Palladian bridge and no less than three lakes.

Alternatively, take a drive outside the beautiful city of Bath and find medieval market towns such as Devizes and Marlborough, or simply lose yourself along quiet country lanes, taking in the timeless panorama of this enchanting corner of England.
