A holiday guide to the Rochdale Canal
A holiday guide to the Rochdale Canal
A dramatic panorama unfolds as you ascend the locks of the Rochdale Canal. Stunning Pennine scenery is par for the course on a cruise along the ‘Backbone of England’.
Striding boldly across the north of England, the Rochdale Canal takes energetic boaters on a voyage of discovery from the heart of Manchester to the spectacular hillscapes of the Pennine Way. The high summit level means lots of locks – but splendid views more than make amends for the climb.
Castlefield revels in the title of Britain’s first Urban Heritage Park. Not only is it the site of numerous historic warehouses and wharves, it is also home to fashionable bars, restaurants and the popular Museum of Science and Industry. Urbanites should take advantage of the big city lights while they can – from here on you will be heading deep into rural Yorkshire.
Hebden Bridge is an attractive mill town – perfect for your first taste of Yorkshire, and maybe your first taste of boating. Many people get afloat here, either by hiring a narrowboat or joining a day trip. Perhaps surprisingly, shopaholics also find plenty to keep them amused with a fine array of fashion boutiques, antique dens and second-hand book shops.
Ambitious walkers can join the famous Pennine Way National Trail from Hebden Bridge; those less up for the rigours of a 270 mile journey can take advantage of the Rochdale Canal towpath and enjoy a gentler walk through the hills. Alternatively, wander from the path and explore the Pennines for yourself on one of several waymarked walking trails which cross the canal.
Cruising on the Rochdale Canal has become deservedly popular in recent years. Once found, the ruggedly beautiful Pennine scenery is not easily forgotten and historic towns such as Littleborough and Sowerby Bridge deserve a second look.
