Llangynidr Locks, 3 December
Llangynidr Locks, 3 December
Llangynidr Locks are being drained so our team can carry out maintenance in the lock chamber. Come and join British Waterways on Saturday 3 December for a unique opportunity to descend to the bottom of the drained canal.
Tours will start from the Coach & Horses Pub at 11am and 2pm. We will start with a presentation in the pub before a guided walk and talk along the lock flight with the unique opportunity to gain a close-up look at the work we do in the winter.
Llangynidr Locks
Llangynidr boasts a section of 5 locks, at the end of a lock-free stretch of over 25 miles. The lock flight lifts the canal 50ft (15m) over ¾ mile (1.2km). This beautiful section of canal is a popular local walk - here are a few things to look out for along this stretch of canal:
- As you’re walking through the lock flight, you will see the water pipes just before the Coach and Horses bridge (number 133,) which are carrying water from the Talybont Reservoir to Newport.
- Between the next 2 locks you’ll see Afon Crawnon Aqueduct – an important water feeder to the canal.
- Locks 67 and 68 are close together and a pond, connected by a culvert under the towpath, helps to maintain the correct water level when the locks are being used. Well-stocked with fish, this pond is popular with anglers.
- Before you finish, above the final lock (number 68) there is a pleasant picnic area with a view of Tor y Foel mountain.
