Canal photography competition
Canal photography competition
As we prepare to transfer our canals and rivers to a New Waterways Charity in 2012, we’re going to say goodbye to waterscape and welcome a brand new website designed to meet the needs of the new organisation and its stakeholders.
We’re already putting together the content for the new site and deciding what to take from waterscape and what to leave out.
As well as providing information for boaters, businesses and regular waterway users, we need to use the new website to inspire people to visit their local waterway and get involved with the new charity. To achieve this we need some great pictures of the canals and rivers looking their best.
It’s no big secret that the photos we have on waterscape don’t always display our canals and rivers in the greatest light! Many are grainy as a result of years of resizing and cropping for various incarnations of waterscape and many have been taken at the mercy of the grey English weather.
Get involved
We’re now giving you the chance to get involved in the new website from the very start. Your photos could be the stars of the new site and be admired by the hundreds of thousands of visitors the site attracts each year.
With a summer full of blue skies ahead of us it’s the perfect time to start collecting photos for our new website. We want your photos of canal wildlife, walking parties, a day out on your bike or snaps of your boating holiday. Essentially we want to know what the canals mean to you.
Please note that, as Scotland's waterways are not going to be part of the new charity, we are only looking for pictures from England and Wales.
To say thank you for your help we’ve teamed up with some of the top canal and heritage attractions across the country who have donated us a number of prizes.
You could win:
- Tickets for a family of five for a Sunday boat trip at the London Canal Museum (must be booked in advance)
- Two family passes to the Black Country Living Museum in the West Midlands
- Two family passes for a river trip and passage on the Anderton Boat Lift in Cheshire
- A family pass to the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port
- A family pass to the Gloucester Waterways Museum
- A family pass to the Canal Museum in Stoke Bruerne
To enter the competition please upload your photos to our flickr group or email them to feedback@waterscape.com. Let us know the title of your photo, the location and which prize you would like to win.
You can also comment on other people’s photographs and discuss your favourite waterway photography spots in our Flickr forum. Please remember this is a fun competition and we need you to keep your postings in this spirit.
Terms and conditions
Do not enter photos which include:
- obscene or offensive language and behaviour
- scenes which might cause embarrassment
- children (without parental permission) or strangers (without permission)
Entries submitted on Flickr.com must be licenced under Creative Commons licence. This can easily be added under ‘Additional Information’ next to each photograph.
Entries must be at least 300dpi
Photos should show a waterway in England or Wales. When entering a photo you must state where and on which canal or river it was taken. You must also list which prize you would like to win.
You may enter as many photos as you like, although you will only be eligible to win one prize
Closing date
The closing date is 31 December 2011. The competition winners will be announced in early January and prizes will be sent out in January. The winners’ photos will be displayed on waterscape.com and any entries may be used on the British Waterways/New Waterways Charity website and in its publications.

A panel of judges will select the winners. All decisions by the judges are final and no correspondence will be entered into. All winners will be contacted immediately after the results of the competition have been announced.
