How to...with Green Blue
How to...with Green Blue
In 2005, The Green Blue Project was launched at the Southampton Boat Show with the aim of promoting and encouraging boaters and other watersports participants to protect coastal and inland waters and habitats.
At this year’s Crick Boat Show, The Green Blue launched their new ‘How to guide’, giving advice and tips to help you think and act in a more environmentally-conscious way. The guide was launched by TV’s Philippa Forrester who became an ambassador to the project in January 2006 and is passionate about the cause.

Q: The Green Blue project seems like a really good cause – how did you get involved with it?
A: I’ve been producing natural history programmes about rivers for years and also produced programmes for Animal Planet about otters. I’ve got a degree in ecology and also written a book about rivers, so it’s something that is quite close to my heart and something I really wanted to get involved with. The surroundings along the rivers and canals are so calming and we have to protect this.
Q: What was the launch about at the Crick Boat Show?
A: I was at the boat show to help launch The Green Blue ‘How to Guide’ which is packed with really simple tips to follow to be more environmentally-friendly when you’re on your boat. It’s great because the tips are so easy to follow. Boats aren’t always the biggest places in the world and it’s difficult to make sure you can recycle and maintain the calming surroundings along the rivers and canals so the guide basically breaks everything down and just makes things easily digestible so being ‘green’ doesn’t seem so difficult.
Q: What kind of tips are in the guide?
A: There are really simple things like try and avoid oil spills, use certain detergents that don’t ruin the planet, reduce your wash so you don’t ruin the environment which is inhabited by waterside wildlife. It also lets you know how to cut noise and exhaust fumes, and use resources in a more sustainable way. They’re all so easy to follow that, once you get into the habit of doing them, you won’t even notice!
Q: What else does the guide have to offer?
A: There is a section on spotting wildlife which is a great way of learning about the different animals you’re likely to see along the water facts about wildlife and alien species.
Q: Where is the guide available?
A: You can request a copy of the guide on the Green Blue website.

The Green Blue guide is launched at Crick.
