Water vole

Water voles have small ears, blunt noses and a short, furry tail. There are six different species in the UK alone. They are pink and hair-free when they are born.

Did you know?

  • Water voles prefer to live along canal banks, slow-moving rivers and marshes;
  • They eat plants along the riverbank;
  • They are sometimes referred to as ‘water rats’ although they are not rats at all;
  • Two layers of fur keep the water voles warm when they are diving into the cold water;
  • People often mistake water voles for brown rats as they are also good at swimming.
