Leeds & Liverpool Canal Route 2
Leeds & Liverpool Canal Route 2
Route 2 is one of five walking routes running alongside the Leeds & Liverpool canal in Merseyside.
The route is a 4.5 mile walking and cycling trail that creates a link between Liverpool and Crosby. It takes you around the waterside area occupied by the Port of Liverpool.
Your exploration begins at Stanley Locks, which mark the northern gateway to the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile World Heritage Site. It ends at Sefton Water Centre and the seafront at Crosby. During your exploration of Route 2 you can find out more about the history of the canal.
Most of the route follows the course of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal before extending across the open grassland of the Rimrose Valley Country Park. This area, which acts as a green corridor linking the coast with the canal, is rich in wildlife including orchids, wildflowers, finches, warblers, damselflies and butterflies.
The Route 2 Canal& Project
The Canal& Project gave communities living along the length of Route 2 an opportunity to describe their memories of the canal, what the canal means to them and their hopes for its future.
During June to September 2008, a series of workshops were held in the following areas: The Eldonians, Bankhall, Queens Bedford, Linacre Village, Bootle, Klondyke, Seaforth and Waterloo.
As well as contributing their thoughts and stories, the communities' contributed to the Liverpool Biennial and Art for Places project in South Sefton. This project will see a significant amount of public artwork being delivered along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
