About the project partners

In February 2006 British Waterways and partners commissioned an Arts & Interpretation Plan for 34km of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Corridor from Pier Head at Liverpool, to the Sefton/Lancashire border.

Due to the scale and complexity of this corridor, the brief stated that the corridor should be broken down into a series of smaller, interlinking trails so that visitors wanting to experience the trail don’t necessarily have to attempt the full stretch in one visit. As a result of this, the consultant who was awarded the tender split the corridor into six different routes.

From this study, it was then decided that the partnership group would commission a further, second study which would focus on detailed design works for 'Route 2' of the wider corridor. This study focused on a 7.2km route between Stanley Lock Flight and Field Lane footbridge in Rimrose Country Park, plus a section of trail through Rimrose Country Park and Waterloo to Crosby Marine Lake. The study also went into greater detail on signage and interpretation designs.

Three years on from when the original study was commissioned and the Route 2 project has been implemented. This has seen the installation of a series of on-site signage, waymarkers and plaques, providing good quality information to visitors through both on-site and web-based media.

The work has engaged a wide audience and continues to promote active public involvement in the site. The installations that you now see have been produced in tandem with the local communities, with the theme focusing on local heritage with specific reference to the canal and its history in the locality.
These web pages have also been created to compliment the on-site signage and interpretation.

Within the Sefton and Liverpool authority boundaries, wide ranging towpath and access improvements have also recently been completed, which make the Route 2 trail even more enjoyable and user friendly. The overall usage of the canal has also increased greatly as a result of the improvements.

British Waterways have worked in partnership with other public agencies to facilitate this work. These organisations are:

• Sefton Council (Sefton MBC)
• Mersey Waterfront
• Liverpool City Council (LCC)
