Mon & Brec 200

2012 sees the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal celebrate its 200th anniversary of opening with a year-long programme of activities and events.

Winding its way through 49 miles of scenic countryside, The Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal passes through a World Heritage site on its way from Brecon past Cwmbran and the City of Newport to Cwmcarn. A 200-year-old feat of engineering, originally built as a corridor for coal and iron, the canal now supports a thriving leisure industry and is much-loved haven for people and nature.

The celebrations will gather together local residents, organisations, community groups and national bodies to recognise the canal’s unique place in history and look to the future. The programme of events will highlight the development plans beyond 2012 as the cherished canal is fully restored as an asset to the communities through which it passes and connects.

The Mon & Brec 200 celebrations will launch on Friday 10 February 2012 with the Ringing of the Bells, recreating the 200-year old opening celebrations. A single bell will be rung at 12 noon by Ben Herbert the great, great, great grandson of Sir Benjamin Hall who gained unexpected immortality by giving the name of ‘Big Ben’ to the bell of the great clock installed in the tower of the Houses of Parliament in 1857. The Hall and Herbert families were industrialists throughout the canal’s industrial period owning Iron Foundries and Tramways. Over 20 Churches along the canal will ring their bells creating a rippling effect from 12 noon to 7.00pm to mark this historic occasion.

A special event will be held at Pontymoile Basin between 11am and 2pm. Further details will follow in the New Year.

Camlas Mynwy ac Aberhonddu 200

Yn 2012, bydd Camlas Mynwy ac Aberhonddu’n dathlu 200 mlynedd ers ei hagor ym 1812. Mae’r gamlas yn ymdroelli am 49 milltir o Aberhonddu i Gwmbrân, Dinas Casnewydd a Chwmcarn, gan ymlwybro drwy gefn gwlad odidog a Safle Treftadaeth y Byd sy’n cydnabod gorffennol diwydiannol pwysig yr ardal. Mae’r gamlas yn gampwaith ym maes peirianneg 200 mlynedd yn ôl, a adeiladwyd yn wreiddiol fel coridor i lo a haearn. Erbyn hyn, mae’n cynnal diwydiant hamdden llewyrchus ac yn hafan dawel i bobl a natur.

Trwy gyfres o weithgareddau a digwyddiadau, bydd sefydliadau, grwpiau cymunedol lleol a chyrff cenedlaethol yn dathlu hanes y gamlas, yn mwynhau ei harddwch ac yn edrych ymlaen at ei datblygiad y tu hwnt i 2012 fel ased gwerthfawr wedi’i hadnewyddu’n llawn i’r cymunedau sydd ar ei glannau ac a gysylltir ganddi.

Caiff un gloch ei chanu am hanner dydd gan Ben Herbert, hen hen hen ?yr Syr Benjamin Hall a sicrhaodd anfarwoldeb iddo’i hun trwy roi’r enw ‘Big Ben’ i gloch y cloc mawr yn nh?r Senedd Sant Steffan yn Llundain ym 1857. Roedd y teuloedd Hall a Herbert yn ddiwydianwyr trwy gydol cyfnod diwydiannol y camlesi, ac roedd ganddynt Ffowndrïau Haearn a Thramffyrdd. Bydd dros 20 o Eglwysi ar hyd y gamlas yn canu eu clychau, gan greu ton o glychau, rhwng hanner dydd a 7pm i ddathlu’r achlysur hanesyddol hwn.
