New homes for old boats

British Waterways are offering fourteen historic workboats to charitable waterway groups to assist them in the promotion of the waterways.

The fourteen boats either predate 1948 or have features giving rise to other heritage value. Until recently they were all used by British Waterways to help maintain its network of canals and rivers, but became redundant as part of a modernisation of British Waterway’s workboat fleet

The historic workboats are being offered to organisations such as canal trusts, waterway related charities, museums and education programmes that can show a heritage interest. The boats are not being offered to private individuals or commercial companies.

Many of the craft will need major repair or renovation, hopefully to their original construction. It is essential that any organisation looking to receive a workboat has the technical ability and commitment to undertake such a project.

Inspection of the boats, detailed below, is strictly by appointment only. In the first instance please contact Mark Duquemin on 0113 284 5219 or email mark.duquemin@britishwaterways.co.uk.

Because at this stage the boats are only being offered to organisations that can demonstrate a suitable home for the boats, British Waterways requires details of an organisation’s committee membership, constitution, objectives, accounts for the previous two years and a summary of projects that the organisation has undertaken.

Applications should be received by Ian White, Director of Technical Development, Fearns Wharf, Neptune Street, Leeds LS9 8PB or email ian.white@britishwaterways.co.uk by 30 November so that decisions about the future allocation of the boats can be made early in 2007.
