Oldest and newest
How old is the oldest and how new is the newest? Find out here.
Built by the Romans, the Fossdyke Navigation is the oldest canal and has remained navigable since it was built. It flows from Lincoln to the River Trent.
The first canal of the industrial age was the Sankey (or St Helens) Canal of 1759, predating its North-Western neighbour the Bridgewater Canal by just two years.
Built in 2002, the Ribble Link is the newest canal on the network. This short waterway, partly based on a stream called the Savick Brook, connected the Lancaster Canal to the main waterway network for the first time ever. As the picture above shows, this thoroughly modern waterway is adorned with equally contemporary sculpture.
