Regular working parties

British Waterways is using its annual volunteer-led spring clean of the canals, Towpath Tidy, to introduce regular volunteering parties across the country. These are intended to be informal groups which will meet once a month to undertake a variety of tasks, from litter picking and vegetation management to painting lock gates and habitat creation.

The regular work parties are a great opportunity for local people to get involved and make a real difference to the canal or river on their doorstep and provide an easy way to get involved in waterways volunteering.

Edward Moss, national volunteering manager at British Waterways, says: “The new regular volunteering parties are a great way for people to get a taster of waterways volunteering. They will be doing valuable work that will transform their local canal or river and will help our staff ensure our historic waterways network receives the best possible care.

"Volunteering on the waterways is a great way of de-stressing and learning new skills, and there’s a real sense of achievement in the difference a group can make in just a short period of time.”

There are already plenty of volunteers making a difference to your local canal or river. To find out about what’s involved read volunteer Paul Martin’s blog.
