American Mink

The bully of the inland waterways, the American mink is often mistaken for an otter because of its thick, brown fur.

However, unlike the shy otter, the mink is actually smaller and far more aggressive. An efficient predator, this menace was brought to Britain in 1929 for commercial fur farms, but once released it set about preying on a variety of waterway natives, including fish, birds, invertebrates and water voles.

It will wander the waterways at all hours, hunting for food, and will sometimes even venture away from the water to hunt bigger animals, such as rabbits.
