Japanese Knotweed


One of the most invasive weeds in Britain, the Japanese Knotweed’s dense growth crowds out native vegetation, erodes riverbanks and causes structural damage.

Originally native only to Japan, Taiwan and China, it was introduced to Europe as an ornamental plant in the 19th century. However, the weed has no natural predators enabling it to grow rapidly, up to 2cm a day and 3 metres high overall.

This horror is common throughout Britain but cannot be cut or manually removed because of its ability to grow from tiny fragments as small as 10mm in length.
