Top five autumn days out

Autumn is on its way, with its slanting sunlight and splendid red and gold colours. But where can you go to see the British countryside at its autumnal best? Take a look at our top 5 ideas for an autumn day out.

1. Admire the foliage at Sheffield Park Garden, near the River Ouse

These magnificent landscape gardens in West Sussex are best viewed twice a year, once in spring for the bluebells, and once in October for the stunning sight of red/gold autumn foliage reflected in the still blue lakes. Once you’ve had your fill of woodlands and waterfalls, drive south for a stroll along the scenic River Ouse.

2. Look out for red deer at Ashridge Estate, near the Grand Union Canal

There’s no greater sight than a noble red deer sporting a fully grown rack of antlers. Why not make the most of autumn’s bounty and admire the ancient woodlands at Ashridge Estate while looking out for the herds of red deer which still roam freely through the trees? Energetic types can tackle the climb up Ivinghoe Beacon; if you fancy a more gentle stroll, the Grand Union Canal winds through the picturesque villages of Marsworth and Wilstone nearby.

Rutland Water is at its loveliest at this time of year – and its circuit is undoubtedly one of Britain’s best cycle routes. Bring your own bike or hire one from the cycle centres at Normanton and Whitwell.
