Anderton Boat Lift, Northwich

The world’s first boat lift.

Situated near Northwich in Cheshire, this amazing structure was built in 1875 and designed by Edwin Clarke. Referred to as the Cathedral of the Canals, the 60 ft high, now hydraulic, lift system is still used to transport boats between the Trent & Mersey Canal and the River Weaver, as well as entertaining visitors with daily boat trips through the lift. Trips last around 40 minutes, but there’s plenty to keep you and the family happy all day with interactive exhibitions, educational facilities, picnic areas and a café for that well deserved rest bite.
