Bingley Five Rise Locks, Bingley

The first staircase lock to be built in Britain.

This spectacular site on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal was constructed in 1774. It is essentially many locks connected together to allow boats to travel either up or down the lock in five stages, and is the steepest flight in the UK. There are smaller staircase locks further along the canal, but the superb engineering of the Bingley Five Rise stands apart, with the immediate and bottom gates being the tallest in the country. These spectacular locks always attract an audience - take the family for a stroll along the canal to witness them in action.
