Standedge Tunnel, Huddersfield
Stretching over 3 ¼ miles.
Based on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, the Standedge Tunnel stretches for over 3 ¼ miles long, from Diggle to Marsden. Building started in 1794 and took 17 years to complete – no surprise when you consider that it is the highest (196m), longest (5,029m) and deepest (194m) canal tunnel in the country. The tunnel was recently reopened in 2001 after a 20 year restoration project, so now’s the time to get down there and see it in its prime. Why not experience this extraordinary feat of engineering through a glass roofed boat? The tunnel is closed now for the winter but will re-open at Easter.
