Tour de France in London

On Saturday 7 July the world’s favourite cycle race got off to an exciting start in central London. The next day, competitors took in the most iconic sights of the capital as they cycled past the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and the London Eye.

The River Thames was their near constant companion as they cycled from the heart of the city to Greenwich and beyond.

Be inspired by the Tour de France – explore the Thames and London by bike

For those not in contention for the Yellow Jersey, cycling along the River Thames in London is a rather cautionary affair. However, cyclists willing to take it slowly and give way to pedestrians have the whole of London at their feet – or (more accurately) their wheels. Many of the capital’s top attractions are conveniently located by the river and the genteel sights of Richmond, Chiswick and Greenwich are all a short spin away.

Cycling along the River Thames is generally easier downstream from Maidenhead towards Reading and Oxford. Exploring this rural stretch of the Thames is particularly pleasurable on two wheels – with numerous waterside pubs to dismount at and nicely spaced railway stations just in case you fancy putting your feet up on the journey home.

The Tour de France tours Kent via the River Medway

From Old Father Thames to the river running through the Garden of England, cyclists see the best of riverside southern England in the 2007 Tour de France. On Sunday 8 July competitors swept through Rochester, Maidstone and Tonbridge – echoing the path of the River Medway as it winds through beautiful Kentish countryside.

Numerous cycle routes (including traffic free paths) wind through the Medway region – many with spectacular riverside views. Get inspired by the Tour de France and get cycling. It’s a great way to get fit, it’s free and fun for all the family too. Find cycle routes near the Medway with Sustrans.
