Every year, tens of thousands of people volunteer to help with schemes along the inland waterways. Some last a day, some a week, some demand more long-term commitment – all appeal to a wide variety of abilities, interests and age groups.

The IWA has been attracting volunteers since it was first set up in 1946 to campaign against the closure of the canals. Today, thousands of people across the UK willingly give up their time to volunteer for different types of activities.

The Waterway Recovery Group, has been volunteering on waterway restoration projects for years and has been running canal camps up and down the country since 1970.

Groundwork regularly work with volunteers from all areas of England, Wales and Northern Ireland to improve the local environment – including rivers, canals and towpaths.

Make a difference to the environment

Each year, Thames21 work with up to 2,000 volunteers from the local community and the private sector. In 2004/05 volunteers helped Thames21 to deliver 52 clean-up jobs on London’s rivers, tributaries and canals. But it’s not all about rubbish!
