Towpath Tidy 2008
Last year’s towpath tidy achieved a record result with 152 tonnes of rubbish removed from the waterways, up from 147 tonnes in 2006 and 121 tonnes in 2005.
Some 585 external volunteers joined 394 predominantly office based staff to spring clean the waterways ahead of the main visitor and boating season. They covered 180 miles of towpath clearing the usual array of crisp packets, drink cans and plastic bags along with a staggering 123 shopping trolleys.
This year British Waterways staff will again take to the towpaths, with the help of interested volunteers, to get the canals spruced up in time for the 2008 summer boating season.
