New urban quarter for London

16th Nov 2007

Proposals for the transformation of Wood Wharf, one of the most significant developments taking place in London over the next decade, will be unveiled today.

The Wood Wharf Limited Partnership has worked with Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, and landscape designers Martha Schwartz Partners to develop a masterplan for the seven hectare site, immediately adjacent to Canary Wharf. It has the potential to deliver approximately 1,400 new homes , almost five million sq ft gross of commercial floor space and a range of retail, recreational and community facilities – all set within a world-class cityscape.

Additional moorings and a new canal

Central to the masterplan is a new Community Park and enhanced access to the waterspace with waterfront recreational areas, additional moorings and a new canal. The design of the Community Park will be one of the main areas for discussion when public consultation on the masterplan begins next week (19th November). There will also be a new high street with shops, cafes and restaurants running through the heart of Wood Wharf. The residential element will include a significant number of much-needed affordable homes, many of which will be for families. The Partnership’s vision is to create a unique urban quarter that is both inclusive and sustainable.
The masterplan builds on the principles for development of the site established in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets’ Supplementary Planning Guidance for Wood Wharf. This was adopted by the local authority following previous consultation on the future of the site undertaken by British Waterways in 2003.
Damian Wisniewski, Chief Operating Officer of Wood Wharf Limited Partnership, said: “Wood Wharf is a key strategic regeneration project for London, complementing both the Thames Gateway and the development of the Olympic zone and further enhancing Canary Wharf’s reputation as one of the world’s most vibrant business centres.
“The site has the potential to deliver thousands of new jobs, some of the best located and designed affordable housing in the country, a significant new Community Park for the Isle of Dogs and a world-class waterfront.”
An outline planning application will be submitted early next year.
