Regeneration of Tottenham’s riverside begins
28th Feb 2008
The riverside regeneration of Tottenham has gained a major boost with the arrival of three stylish business barges at Hale Wharf on the River Lee navigation.
Supported by the London Development Agency (LDA) and British Waterways (BW), the £1million scheme will provide accommodation for small businesses within the creative, cultural and IT sectors.
The three boats, named Renaissance, Judith and Belle are part of a wider scheme to provide Tottenham with a thriving urban centre and a new high quality waterfront.
Breathing new life into Tottenham’s waterways
Regeneration Projects Manager for BW, Tav Kazmi said “these striking commercial barges are part of a plan to breathe new life into the area’s waterway, and provide a distinctive and modern working environment in the heart of one of the Capital’s principal growth areas with excellent transport links. Ideal for small to medium-sized enterprises, these floating work spaces would suit businesses from the creative, cultural and high-tech industries.”
Central to the Tottenham Hale masterplan
The boats will help to create a new riverside destination, complementing the current development at Hale Village and the proposed development at Hale Wharf. Both of these projects are part of the Tottenham Hale masterplan, which has identified the potential for up to 2,500 homes and thousands of new jobs. Adding to these plans, British Waterways are also working with regeneration partners to provide habitat and access improvements, new visitor moorings and even a working wharf for moving waste off the roads and onto barges.
Two of the boats, Renaissance and Judith, are brand new purpose-built barges inspired by the design of the traditional River Lee powder barges; the barges used to transport cargo such as gunpowder. Built by Manor Marine in Dorset, the 25 metre long craft offer 1,000 square feet of space and are now available for rental. The third barge, Belle is 23 metres long providing 800 square feet of space, and was newly refurbished at MSO Marine on the Grand Union Canal.
