Loveable canines wanted for Standedge dog show
15th Apr 2008
Dogs with the waggiest tails, prettiest eyes, and the most charming personalities are amongst those being invited to take part in Standedge’s first dog show, organised by British Waterways and the British pet charity, The Blue Cross.
On Sunday 1 June, Kirklees will hold its alternative to Crufts, K9s on Canals. The show will be held in the Lily Turner picnic area next to the Standedge Tunnel Visitor Centre, with 10 categories for dogs to enter at £1 per class.
Throughout the day, Blue Cross education experts and Kirklees’ dog wardens will be on hand to give advice to pet owners, and will be giving talks during the day at the Visitor Centre.
In addition to this, there will also be an opportunity to raise money for the Blue Cross by taking part in a one, three, or seven mile walk along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
All the money raised will go towards funding the Blue Cross animal adoption centre in Thirsk, which has recently been granted planning permission for a £1.5 million rebuild. The new buildings will feature more modern facilities, replacing the currently outdated kennels and isolation areas, and allowing the charity to better care for more needy pets.
Leisure Business Manager for British Waterways, Steve Hemming says: “Walking the dog along the canal towpath is a popular activity for pet owners and we are keen to encourage this amongst responsible dog owners. We are happy to partner with The Blue Cross for this event as it should be a lot of fun for everyone, as well as increase awareness of things to do at the Standedge site.”
Registration for K9s on Canals is from 10.30am at the Visitor Centre, on Sunday 1 June. Sponsorship forms are available from Marsden Information Point, Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre, or from The Blue Cross by contacting Julie Donn on 01472 353435 or by emailing julie.donn@bluecross.org.uk.
