Hapton embankment works underway
30th Apr 2008
Visitors to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Hapton will benefit from a partnership project that will add the final touches to a major towpath and embankment scheme.
The £27,000 scheme is funded by Lancashire Environmental Fund and Lancashire County Council and is being overseen by British Waterways.
The works are now underway and within about a week will have delivered:
- widened, waterproofed towpath surface for enhanced customer safety;
- increased appeal to leisure visitors, particularly walkers and cyclists;
- improved environmental appearance.
British Waterways' external funding officer Nick Smith said the scheme involves surfacing 1.2 km of towpath between Higher Shuttleworth (Bridge 120) and Manchester Road (Bridge 121).
Improved the lifespan and safety of the embankment
"This stretch of towpath has recently been upgraded and stoned as part of a £180,000 repairs programme, which has improved the lifespan and safety of the embankment. This funding will add value to the project and and complete the works to a higher standard," said Nick.
These earlier works involved embankment strengthening, vegetation clearance and the installation of permanent mooring bollards and were completed in November.
