Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal Trust secure access to River Severn

7th Jul 2008

The Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Trust have purchased a length of the River Severn in Gloucester, ensuring that the canal will have access to the rest of the 2,500 mile long network when it is fully restored.

The stretch of river includes a disused lock beside Llanthony Weir, which was once used to raise the river to the level of the current navigation in Gloucester. The weir is situated on the east channel of the River Severn, below the entrance to Gloucester Lock, and is just on the edge of the major redevelopment at Gloucester Quays.

The Trust aims to fully restore the 34 mile long Herefordshire & Gloucester Canal, from Hereford City to Gloucester, eventually connecting it up with the River Severn and therefore the rest of the waterway network. Now with the purchase of this land, which also includes a pair of cottages, the trust is one step closer to completing its goal.

The Trust will now be putting together a programme of work over the next couple of years to tidy up the site. More information about the Trust's work can be found at www.h-g-canal.org.uk.
