Trailboats head for Newport in 2004

18th Dec 2003

Preparations are underway for one of 2004's major waterway festivals, to be held on the Monmouthshire Canal in Newport, South Wales.

The three-day National Trailboat Festival will take place over the late May bank holiday weekend at Malpas, Newport. Trailable boats - lightweight craft that can be towed behind cars - are expected to support this event as they did in 2000.

The Monmouthshire, Brecon & Abergavenny Canals Trust hopes the event will publicise its ambition of restoring the Monmouthshire Canal between Cwmbran and Newport, together with the picturesque Crumlin Branch. This will create a continuous waterway all the way from Brecon to the coast - opening up the attractive, but land-locked Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal.

Thanks to a £4,300 grant from Awards for All Wales, the Trust hopes to offer free entry and provide a lively entertainments programme.
