Waxing lyrical on the Ribble Link

18th Jul 2003

Students at Cottam Primary School have been waxing lyrical about the new Millennium Ribble Link, near Preston. After a visit to the waterway, where the children also watched a demonstration of how the new locks work, the students were asked to put their thoughts on the Link into verse.

The poetical results have now been inscribed for posterity on the new interpretation panels which have been placed on site. These steel panels feature information about the new waterway, 'Did you know?' facts, and brass rubbings. Around each of the four panels runs a poem from one of the students.

British Waterways' Claire Chapman explained: "These panels are designed to tell people more about how we built this new waterway, and what lives and grows there. They are just part of a host of new additions planned for the area to make it more visitor friendly.

"We are also planning a big First Birthday Party on 20 September and we’d like everyone to come down and visit us. It’s great that local children are taking such an interest in the Link, and it’s our way to say thanks."
