Tales of the Trent

18th Jul 2003

Walkers and boaters on the River Trent can now take a step back into the past. An 'audio post' has been installed at Gunthorpe Lock, Nottinghamshire - giving visitors the chance to listen to interesting tales about the past and present of this fascinating waterway.

One of the voices heard is that of Chris Chapman, 58. Chris is a tug boat operator who has worked for British Waterways for 41 years, and whose family worked on the waterway for generations before. He has many stories to tell about life on the Trent and the way the waterway used to be.

The audio post uses no electricity, but is simply operated by winding the handle around. Two different story options can be selected by turning the handle either way.

Other improvements include brand new interpretation boards at Gunthorpe and Stoke Lock, while seating is to be installed here and at other locations along the river. British Waterways' Stephanie Peacock said: "A trip to the riverside is great on its own, but we want to make the experience even more enjoyable. With our audio post and interpretation boards, visitors to the waterway can have a truly interactive visit."
