Canal Watch scheme launched in West London
23rd Jul 2008
British Waterways and the Metropolitan Police have teamed up to launch a Canal Watch scheme, between the junction of the Slough Arm on the Grand Union Canal and Denham Deep Lock in Uxbridge.
With a similar neighbourhood watch scheme already in place at Packet Boat Marina, the new extended scheme now includes the 3½ mile stretch of towpath.
Matthew Bannister, mooring coordinator for British Waterways, comments: “Police officers patrolling the canal will now be a far more regular occurrence making the canal seem and feel a safer place to live and use.
“In addition, Canal Watch will be a new way for residents and people using the towpath to report things such as fly-tipping, graffiti or any suspicious behaviour. Ahead of the success of this inaugural scheme, I’m already in discussion with the police about extending the initiative to include other parts of the canal network in West London.”
There was a great turnout on 16 July with barely enough room to stand at Packet Boat Marina, when the Met Police marine unit and representatives from British Waterways launched the Canal Watch scheme.
