IWA publishes its Annual Report
The Inland Waterways Association has published its Annual Report and Financial Statements for 2007, detailing its campaigning activities on behalf of the waterways and its financial results for the year.
Highlights for last year included its continued defence of the principal navigation authorities' funding, which was threatened by cuts in grant in aid from Government. The IWA was active in direct lobbying of Government and in the much publicised blockades of the waterways network and subsequent protest cruise past Parliament.
Equally noteworthy, though receiving less media attention, was the IWA's continued support and active engagement in waterways restoration, through grants to local waterway restoration organisations, and its ever-active volunteer labour arm, Waterway Recovery Group. In addition to organising work parties throughout Britain's waterways nearly every weekend of the year, it also organised twenty, week long Waterway Working Holidays for groups of keen volunteers, which enabled a vast amount of work to be completed in a short period of time.
John Fletcher, IWA national chairman said: "I am delighted to put on record the continuing achievements of the IWA in helping to campaign for, preserve and restore the waterways of Britain. 2007 was a busy year for us, and showed how important it is for there to be an active organisation ensuring that the waterways continue to be championed and cared for.
"IWA continues to attract and retain members who are very loyal, resulting in a continuing firm financial base from which the IWA can conduct its charitable campaigns on behalf of the waterways. I hope this very positive review of our work will encourage others to join us in our mission to maintain and preserve the waterways for future generations".
Copies of the IWA’s 2007 Annual Report and Financial Statements can be viewed at: www.waterways.org.uk/Library/ReportAccounts. An illustrated summary Annual Review 2007/8 is also available at the same location, and printed copies are available from the IWA Head Office.
