Discover a holiday like no other…

7th Oct 2008

As the cost of European holidays continues to rise, British Waterways is encouraging holidaymakers to consider taking a UK canal holiday as an alternative to foreign travel. Better value breaks can easily be found in the UK, with boating being a green, hassle-free alternative to flying overseas, offering all the adventure of discovering a new environment.

Cruising on a narrowboat in Birmingham

Each year more than 200,000 people set off on a canal holiday, with prices for a weekend break starting at £60 per person, the average cost of a canal holiday compares favourably with foreign travel. With 2,200 navigable canals and rivers across Britain, there are lots of places to explore, ranging from city centre canals to peaceful rural waterways.

British Waterways and canal hire boat experts Drifters are inviting members of the public to come down to the canal at Brindleyplace and Gas Street in Birmingham City Centre, to find out just what an increasingly popular break for people of all ages boating can be. Experts will be on hand to give information and advice about hiring a canal boat and if that isn’t enough to tempt your imagination, you can step aboard a hire boat and go on a short free boat trip, to experience what it’s like on the move.

If you’re interested in finding out more about canal holidays, come along to meet with the experts and view the hire boats on Friday 10 October between 11am - 6pm and Saturday 11 October 2008 between 10am - 5pm. You'll find the action at the rear of the National Indoor Arena (NIA) by the bridge across to Brindleyplace and also at the rear of Panama Bar in Gas Street Basin.
