Chester's towpath gets a facelift
The Shropshire Union Canal towpath from Chester to Ellesmere Port is now more accessible to cyclists and walkers, after £1.5m of improvements.
The work, led by British Waterways and local councils, opens up 11 miles (18 kilometres) of multi-user, all weather canalside access. The project began in 1997 as part of a local "Greenways" initiative, with each of its nine phases designed to enhance the quality of rural traffic-free links between major urban centres.
At an average of nearly two metres wide, the towpath boasts a wide range of visitor friendly features, including:
- New ramped access at many entry and exit points;
- Landscaping and environmental improvements;
- Artistic marker posts and seating;
- Access link to Chester Zoo, just half a mile away;
- Fibredeck all weather surfacing for safety and
durability.
Plans are now in hand to complete the final link between Christleton and Waverton.
