Boat Museum celebrates £900,000 win

22nd Dec 2003

Supporters of the Boat Museum in Ellesmere Port - the largest collection of historic waterway craft in Britain - are celebrating after the museum was awarded £900,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Fund has confirmed the grant for the museum's 'Project 25', an ambitious scheme to revitalise the Island Warehouse with new activities and displays. The Shropshire Union Canal warehouse is one of several historic buildings on the site.

Museum staff have now applied to the North-West Development Agency for the final £340,000 that will enable the project to go ahead. If this is successful, work will start next year.

Other exciting plans for the museum include a proposed 'Sponsor a Historic Boat' scheme, and an education programme to inspire local people to discover the history of the waterways.
