Waterways safety plea as summer scorcher is forecast

11th Jun 2009

Weathermen are forecasting a scorching summer across the UK – and British Waterways is asking parents and visitors to make sure their children play SAFE and Stay Away From the Edge of canals, rivers, reservoirs and lakes.

The Mon & Brec Canal is preparing for the summer season

There are a host of popular visitor destinations along the UK's picturesque network of canals, rivers and reservoirs that make ideal places to picnic, cycle, stroll and generally enjoy the summer sunshine.

Now the UK waterway authority is asking visitors to ensure they enjoy these amenities responsibly by following the safety code.

Their SAFE plea is also aimed at teenagers and young people tempted by a cooling dip particularly after drinking alcohol in the sunshine – a potentially deadly combination.

Canals, rivers and reservoirs may appear calm and inviting on a warm day, but the water conceals hidden dangers in the form of hidden machinery, strong currents and waterborne perils like the potentially fatal Weil’s Disease.

Water can also be colder than expected, with the sudden temperature change bringing on potentially life threatening cramps in even the strongest of swimmers.

British Waterways Wales & Border Counties General Manager Julie Sharman said canal environments offer everything from scenery and boating to a host of land based events and activities which can be enjoyed safely by all the family.

Under no circumstances should anyone enter the water

"It is important to remember canals were built for industrial boat traffic not bathing. Under no circumstances should anyone enter the water. Young children visiting the waterways should always be supervised by adults, while everyone should follow our Stay Away From the Edge message," she said.

Teachers and children can visit www.wow4water.net to find out more about Britain’s inland waterways and how to be SAFE by learning to Stay Away From the Edge when near water.
