Lune Aqueduct public consultation
Local people with memories of the Lune Aqueduct have the opportunity to play a major part in the upgrade of the magnificent Lune structure as part of an Open Day on Sunday 6 June.
The event, which is being organised by British Waterways and consultant Marion Blockley, is taking place between 11am -5 pm next to the Lune Aqueduct at Skerton.
British Waterways are hoping that people with anecdotes or photographs about the Lune Aqueduct and Lancaster Canal will share their memories at the consultation. The information gathered will be used to help interpret the area and bring the heritage and environmental stories of the aqueduct to life.
Bring heritage to life
Come along and watch the regatta take place on the river below, and see copies of a 200 year old painting of the aqueduct, found recently on ebay in America.
Local artist, Chas Jacob will be running drawing workshops for all the family to take part, to capture their own view of Lancaster, the aqueduct and the regatta.
£50k from Heritage Lottery Fund
British Waterways has been awarded £50k from the Heritage Lottery Fund to undertake a series of vital studies and surveys of the site, which forms the cornerstone of ambitious plans to develop the Lancaster Canal as a key visitor centre and regional economic generator.
The detailed plans will be submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund, and hopefully work will start early in 2011.
The plans will make the Grade I listed aqueduct – which carries the picturesque Lancaster Canal over the River Lune – more accessible and visually appealing to visitors, in addition to underpinning the structural integrity of the aqueduct for decades to come.
