Flotilla to celebrate 10th anniversary of the Union Canal
A colourful selection of almost 60 modern and historic craft will journey the length of the Union Canal, from Edinburgh to the Falkirk Wheel.
The Flotilla will take place on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the reopening of the Union Canal.
Vessels taking part will include traditional narrowboats and former fishing boats through to old Edwardian steam launches evoking a time gone by on the two hundred year old canal.
The Forth & Clyde Society’s two thirds size Puffer will be amongst the craft so too Ratho Princess – built in 1923 and the oldest in the flotilla fleet.
Heralding the way when the flotilla leaves Edinburgh Quay will be the Victoria. This replica steam packet boat was the first to enter the Union Canal when it reopened as part of the Millennium Link Project in 2000.
From Edinburgh to the Falkirk Wheel
The flotilla will make its way from Edinburgh Quay to The Falkirk Wheel over the course of the celebratory weekend.
The eye-catching flotilla will pass through the many communities which have benefited greatly by having the revitalised canal on their doorstep.
To add to the celebration, musicians of all ages and abilities are invited to come and play along the route. A unique rehearsal space or unusual debut venue, it is bound to offer groups and soloists a stunning backdrop to air their talents.
Journey’s end at The Falkirk Wheel on Sunday will also be marked by a Teddy Bear Parachute fund-raising event by the Seagull Trust which provides free canal cruising for disabled people.
