British Waterways to issue narrowboats with indicators
In an attempt to make our canals and rivers a safer place for all who enjoy them, British Waterways has today announced its intention to make indicator lights mandatory on all narrowboats.
Following an extensive study by the Forum of Over Legislation, British Waterways believes that flashing indicator lights fitted to the rear of all boats will help cut collision rates on the canals, reduce boaters’ insurance claims and make the waterways more harmonious for all.
Use hand signals
British Waterways is going to give boaters on its navigations three months in which to have indicator lights fitted to the rear of their boats which can operated by a switch next to the tiller. In the meantime boaters are requested to ensure they use hand signals when manoeuvring.
British Waterways’ new ideas Tsar, Ian Diot said: “As we are gearing up for the summer season and the busiest time of year for our waterways we want to ensure everyone can enjoy them fully. We believe this new venture will help boaters to communicate their intentions better and make Britain’s canals and rivers a safer place.”
