Learn to de-fend your boat
Canal boaters are being offered the chance to learn the craft of making traditional fenders at the National Waterways Museum next month.
The weekend course is being held on 19-20 November and will be taught by Dave Walker, an expert in this craft.
Canal boat fenders are traditionally made from knotted rope. Students on the course can make and take away two side fenders, a short button and a deck matt, and can also have a go at splicing mooring lines.
The two day course costs £65 per person – which includes all the materials needed to make the fenders, the matt and the turks-heads, plus museum entry. There are only six places available so to book call 0151 355 5017.
The National Waterways Museum, is located on the Shropshire Union Canal at Ellesmere Port. It is home to the national collection of historic working boats, along with a trip boat, hands-on exhibits, stables, a blacksmith, docks, pump houses, workers cottages and gardens.
