Ruby anniversary for narrowboat theatre company
A theatre company that tours the country by narrowboat threw a party to celebrate its fortieth anniversary this weekend.
The Mikron Theatre Company held its ‘Ruby Do’, in its home village of Marsden in Yorkshire, for actors and other company members from throughout its history, as well as loyal audience members. The 150 guests wore red in honour of the company’s ruby anniversary.
The guests were treated to performances of a selection of songs from Mikron’s past productions, as well as reminiscences from many of those involved in the company through the years. Actor Mark Williams, of Fast Show and Harry Potter fame, spent his first three years and gained his Equity Card as a performer working for Mikron. He talked fondly of his time with the company.
Loyal audiences
The company perform their original plays at canalside venues across the country, including pubs, beer gardens, village halls and waterways festivals, bringing theatre to new and different audiences in the process.
Marianne McNamara, the company’s artistic director said: “What makes Mikron special is the feeling of belonging you get while traveling the waterways, because of the type of places we perform, the actors are always out talking to the punters and getting to know them. There’s a real sense of community among the people that follow us – they’re always telling us stories about their memories of the company or the first show they saw.”
The company was in danger of having to close after being left with no formal funding last year, but was saved by donations and sponsorship.
Actor Nicola Redman, who has just completed her first season for Mikron, said “I’ve had a growing sense of the loyalty of Mikron’s audiences over the tour, but today has really brought home the appreciation of their involvement. I’ve been genuinely moved by the stories and I am proud and honoured to have been involved in the company.”
