Take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch

26th Jan 2012

This weekend, the RSPB is asking wildlife lovers across the country to take part in a survey. The Big Garden Birdwatch provides the charity with vital data about bird populations.

All you need to do is set aside an hour this weekend, to watch the birds in your garden, local park or stretch of canal towpath. Make a note of the highest number of each bird species you see on the ground at any one time. Then, submit your results online at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch.

You don’t have to have a conventional garden to join in – the RSPB has posted a video on its website, showing how you can spot birds from your narrowboat.

Unpredictable weather

The Big Garden Birdwatch has been happening annually for more than 30 years. The data collected gives the RSPB a snapshot of bird numbers in different areas, and helps identify conservation work that needs to be done.

After a mild start to the winter, followed by extreme winds and snow in some areas, the RSPB is keen to find out what effect the weather has had on birds. The RSPB’s Sarah Houghton said: “The last few months have been anything but predictable so it will be interesting to see what kinds of birds people are seeing this weekend, and in what numbers. With plenty of natural food still about some of the usual suspects might be a bit elusive, but heavy rain and strong winds could send other surprises our way.

“And spring-like signs might even be inspiring early breeding activities. There’s already been lots of evidence of birds recce-ing potential nest sites so whatever the weather, it’ll be a busy time.”
