Golden opportunity for floating businesses

6th Feb 2012

Today British Waterways is offering floating businesses from across the country the opportunity to be a part of the Olympic summer on London’s canals and rivers.

Traders wishing to take advantage of the increase in visitors coming to London from across the UK and around the world, have been offered the opportunity to take up mooring berths, with discounts available to those booking consecutive weeks and long stays.

Phil Spencer, British Waterways’ national boating trade manager said: “Floating businesses are a really interesting sight on the waterways, and the visiting public are always very interested in what’s for sale from these boats.

'Market' on the canals

“We appreciate that the economic climate remains tough for traders, which is why we are looking to support businesses wishing to come to London for the duration of the Games this summer.

“We hope, if there is enough interest, to help floating businesses create a ‘market’ on the canals in London and encourage towpath visitors to discover what’s on offer afloat.”

Last year British Waterways took the decision to create a mooring zone within central London to help manage boat traffic, ensure trading boats can operate safely and efficiently, and support security during next summer’s Olympic Games period. This means that boaters can pre-book a guaranteed berth for set week/s at a time to ensure they are at the heart of the city in what is set to be an amazing summer of sport, culture and excitement. British Waterways is working closely with local boaters to minimise disruption during the period.

Close to the action

The canal network is on the doorstep of the Olympic Park, and is a much loved and popular feature of east London.

The Regent’s Canal towpath in this area is a designated official Olympic walking and cycling route, and recently confirmed by the Mayor of London. Victoria Park, alongside the Hertford Union Canal will be one of the official live sites during summer 2012 from 27 July–12 August.

The live sites will host a combination of multiple state-of-the-art screens and concert quality sound systems that will show all of the London 2012 action. Everything from sports participation activities, live music and cultural entertainment will be on offer every day until late evening.

The Roving Canal Traders Association said: "For the small licensed traders that will be attending the Olympics this year, this is a fantastic opportunity to do business."
