First chairman for Wye boating group

18th Dec 2003

Christopher Bartlett has been appointed as the first chairman of the Environment Agency’s new Wye Navigation Advisory Committee.

The Wye Navigation Order was made by the Secretary of State for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, with the agreement of the National Assembly for Wales, in July 2002, following a three-month public inquiry held in 1997 and the Inspector’s conclusion that the Agency was the most suitable body to manage navigation on the Rivers Wye and Lugg in a fully integrated way.

A key requirement of the Order is the establishment of the new advisory committee operating under an independent chairperson and incorporating a wide range of user interests. The committee will play a major role in ensuring that the future management of navigation on the Rivers Wye and Lugg will benefit the catchment as a whole. All of the committee’s meetings will be held in public.

Cheltenham-born Christopher Bartlett, 61, was educated at Bournemouth Grammar School and Kingston College of Technology obtaining a BSc in Chemistry in 1964. He started his career with the British Petroleum Company Research Centre as a laboratory assistant in 1960 and became a project manager with world-wide responsibility for fuel-related issues before taking early retirement in 1992. He spent a short time as a technical officer with the United Kingdom Petroleum Industry Association and he was a programme manager on behalf of the Royal Navy for the Ministry of Defence/ Defence Research Agency between 1993 and 2001. He now lives in Ross-on-Wye.

Mr. Bartlett, who is a Fellow of the Energy Institute and a Fellow (retired) of the Royal Society of Chemistry, is currently Chairman (Convenor) of the European Standards Organisation (CEN) Committee on Diesel Fuel Quality and Chairman of the Royal Naval Advisers on Fuels and Lubricants (NAFL).

Married with two children and three grandchildren, he is interested in industrial history, including mines, railways and canals; philately, walking, bird-watching and reading.
