Preston Brook set for 2005 festival boost

26th May 2004

Preston Brook on the Bridgewater Canal in Cheshire has been chosen to host the 2005 Inland Waterways Association (IWA) National Waterway Festival and Boat Show.

The event will take place over the August Bank Holiday. Event chairman Ian West said of the site at Wharfod Farm, not far from Junctions 11 and 12 of the M56 and near the Trent & Mersey Canal: "With the canal curving around two sides of the site, there will be plenty of room for boats, and good access between the moorings and the main festival site."

The Cheshire location has been selected to raise awareness of what the IWA regards as the underused canal between Preston Brook Junction and Runcorn, and as part of its campaign for the re-opening of Runcorn Locks and the Runcorn and Weston Canal.

This would create a new ring for boaters, enabling boats to cruise from the Bridgewater Canal to the River Weaver, through the Anderton Lift and back on the Trent and Mersey Canal.
