Chichester Canal towpath to become cycleway

25th Jun 2003

Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, is planning to incorporate the Chichester Canal towpath as part of the future National Cycle Network Route 2.

The Chichester Canal Society and Sustrans volunteers have already started work on trimming back vegetation on the path near the Canal Basin. The path runs from the centre of Chichester, and links to quiet lanes and routes to the sea from Chichester.

Lorraine Turnbull, Sustrans Rangers North, said: "I've organised a lot of working weekends, and people always feel good at the end of them. The work is fun and you can see a result at the end of the day".

The National Cycle Network was initiated with a Lottery grant of £43.5 million from the Millennium Commission to provide a legacy of new facilities for walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users in the 21st Century.
