Droitwich Canals restoration gathers pace

4th Jul 2003

Plans to restore the derelict Droitwich Canals have taken a step forward with the announcement of new canalside development proposals.

Wychavon District Council has identified seven key sites along the Droitwich Barge and Droitwich Junction canals, and named its preferred uses for each one. The canals were recently earmarked for a multi-million pound Heritage Lottery Fund grant and could reopen as soon as 2007.

At Hanbury Locks, where the Droitwich Junction Canal leaves the Worcester & Birmingham Canal, the council would like to see a marina for up to 90 boats. The development would incorporate a pub, chandlery for boaters, visitor facilities and a children’s play area. Before any work can begin, the resident population of great crested newts must be safeguarded.

Two canalside garages in central Droitwich could be turned into houses and offices. Then, beside Vines Park and the canal’s Netherwich Basin, the council is planning a mixed development of shops, tourist facilities, offices and flats as a canal centrepiece. New canalside seating and improvements to the park will aim to make this a focal point for canal visitors.

On the Droitwich Barge Canal, a small eight-berth basin with a village shop is proposed for the Chawson Valley; a further 11-berth basin for Ladywood; and a tea-shop at Porter’s Mill.
